What to expect during Mohs surgery

The Mohs procedure is typically performed in our office under local anesthesia. The doctor will outline the cancer, numb the area, remove a layer of skin, and stop the bleeding with cauterization. A medical assistant will bandage the area, and you will wait while the tissue is processed and examined, which takes about an hour. If the tissue reveals that there is still cancer, the process is repeated until all the cancerous tissue is removed. This can require several layers, depending on the extensiveness of the cancer roots. The entire process may take several hours, so it is important to come prepared.
